Michele & Steven had been dating for more than eight years, so Steven knew it wouldn’t be easy to surprise Michele with a proposal. It was the day after Steven’s birthday, and the couple was planning celebrate over dinner with both of their families and meet up with friends. But Steven surprised Michele by decorating their entire apartment with flowers right before they were to leave for dinner — which in actuality was their engagement celebration.
When it came time to pick a venue, the couple new right away that The New York Botanical Garden was the right fit. “We were conflicted on whether we wanted more of a city or a country feel, and we felt like Botanical was the best of both worlds,” says Michele. “We also both love to try new, fun restaurants and loved that Abigail Kirsch put a modern spin on standard wedding food to make everything new and interesting.”
The couple knew that they wouldn’t be able to get married outdoors in New York during March and wanted to find a way to bring the outside in. “The Garden Terrace Room was the perfect place to do this since the murals on the walls automatically made us feel like we were outside,” says Michele. They incorporated cherry blossoms into the setting as well because the timing was seasonally right and Steven went to college in D.C. “I spent a lot of time there with him when we were first dating, so cherry blossoms were especially meaningful to us,” she says.
Michele: The BBQ Chicken Mac & Cheese Bites during cocktail hour! It was the first thing I wanted to eat after we got married! Also the shakes & fries station that we set up as our guests were leaving our wedding.
Steven: The butlered sweets at the end of the night — donuts, ice cream cones & cookies!
“We have two,” says Michele. “First was when the doors opened to the ceremony and we saw each other from down the aisle. Second, since both our parents coincidentally had the same wedding song — ‘Here, There & Everywhere’ by the Beatles — we decided to choose the same song for ourselves. We didn’t tell our parents beforehand, so seeing their reactions when it came on as our song was truly priceless.”
“We have been receiving nonstop compliments on how amazing the entire wedding — especially how creative the food was! Everyone keeps telling us how not one detail was overlooked — from the amazing hors d’oeurves, to the cocktail station, dinner, dessert, delicious wedding cake, butlered sweets and the shakes & fries — it was the best food they’ve ever had at a wedding,” says Michele. “I never doubted how amazing our wedding would be, but Abigail Kirsch really exceeded all of our expectations.”
