Steve and Cassie first met when they were 14 at high school band camp and began dating after their high school graduation. Seven years later, Steve popped the question after the two finished watching Monsters Inc. — the first movie they had watched together as high school seniors.

Cassie and Steve chose to marry at The Lighthouse because of its gorgeous view from the terrace and the industrial feel of the hardwood floors and exposed duct-work. In fact, Cassie’s sister and maid of honor, Olivia burst into tears when she first saw the space, because it was so perfect. “But really it was all about the food,” says Cassie. “And Abigail Kirsch did not disappoint!”

Cassie wanted the event to feel like a garden party, which translated into paper lanterns hanging over the dance floor, escort cards clothes-pinned to twine strung along the railing, and very simple wildflowers on the tables in a variety of brown bottles.

The couple added special DIY touches — the most prominent being Steve’s home-brewed beer with “Ale You Need Is Love” on each table. They kept the theme going by naming the tables after their favorite craft breweries, making coaster escort cards, and giving bird bottle openers (combining Cassie’s love of animal-shaped kitchen items with Steve’s favorite hobby of brewing). They even added homemade favor tags that read: “Thank you so much for coming! It wouldn’t have been the same without you here. Cassie hopes this little bird will make you smile; Steve hopes you’ll have a beer.”

Cassie: A fantastically delicious tie between the Mac & Cheese BBQ Chicken hors d’oeuvres and the Harvest Trio dessert. And the mini ice cream cones!

Steve: Ginger cinnamon ice cream and cranberry sorbet pumpkin cake sandwich (part of the Harvest Trio)

“In Steve’s family, there is a tradition in which everyone forms a circle and dances around a bottle. It was wonderful to see his family welcome my family to join in — which they did quite enthusiastically,” says Cassie.

“The phrase ‘best wedding ever’ is one that we have heard often — this proclamation came from one guest even before dessert was served,” says Cassie. “Our guests frequently comment on the small, personal touches that made our wedding unique. Additionally, people have shared with us how much they enjoyed the wine, the cocktail hour, entrees, and especially the red velvet cake. Our guests compare the food to their favorite restaurants, rather than to typical wedding fare. Though most of the compliments were directed at the food, we have also had guests comment on the beauty of the decorations and The Lighthouse itself. My dad frequently remarks on how attentive and helpful our event manager was, and how he could easily relax and enjoy the party!”

Jeff knew that Amy was impossible to surprise, so he figured the only way to catch her off guard was when she was asleep. He woke Amy up to some of their favorite things, and after a few sweet moments, Jeff was on one knee. He planned a whole day of revisiting some of their favorite memories in NYC, including where they first met and where they had their first date.

Finding the right location for their big day came next. “After visiting multiple venues, we knew Tappan Hill was the right one for us because it had everything we were looking for – beautiful location, intimate, elegant and great food and service,” says Amy.

The couple wanted to incorporate seasonal fall colors — like deep oranges, yellows, and greens — as well as both of their religions and cultures into their Jewish/Chinese ceremony. “We went with a soft, drapey chuppah, and as part of the ceremony, tied in many various Chinese influenced traditions and colors,” says Amy.

Amy: All the hors d’oeuvres — especially the blanketed franks

Jeff: The Miso Glazed Red Snapper (with rice and poppy seeds), so good!

“Our favorite moment was the first time we saw each other outside on the promenade where we then got married. It was really intimate and special for us,” says Amy. As for Jeff, the the most emotional moment of the whole day was when he laid eyes on his bride for the first time!

The couple will also never forget when the lead band member asked everyone to form a circle and pulled in various people to dance. “The best part was when my brother broke down in a break dance and flipped up from the ground!” says Amy.

“Our guests talked about how much fun they had at our wedding, and the really delicious food both at the cocktail hour and reception. And the great dancing!” says Amy. “Our wedding day was one of the best days of our lives! We couldn’t have done it without the team at Tappan Hill!”

  • Tips for Brides
    Posted: January 10, 2011 at 8:29 pm

We gathered some of our seasoned events managers, who collectively have overseen hundreds of weddings, and asked them what a bride can do to make the big day as smooth as possible. Here is what they had to say:

    The Music
Create a list of songs you “do” want your band/d.j. to play, but DO NOT create a specific list and playing order for them to follow.  Many brides and grooms have arrested the ability of the talent they hired, by overmanaging the beats, resulting in missing those “festive highs” the pros know how to attain.

    The Menu
Don’t plan a menu thinking you’re going to please everyone.
Do design your menu to celebrate the season and to please the majority.

    Be yourself
Voice what is important to you.  The best weddings we see are the ones that are allow the personalities of the couple to shine through.

    Traditions
Honor traditions;  they create those touching moments. Try not to combine more than two toasts at a time…it will get tedious. Get the guests back on the dance floor.

    DO accept help when offered
You cannot be everywhere and do everything.  If a friend offers to pickup Aunt Millie at the airport – let her!

    DO stay organized
Keep everything in one place for easy reference, whether it is on your iPad or in that huge wedding binder your best friend bought for you the second you got engaged; it will save time in the long run.

    DON’T forget to enjoy yourself!
Be a guest at your own wedding!!!  This is a once in a lifetime experience and you should cherish every second!

The very “name equals quality and class”, and Abigail Kirsch’s byword in “elegant” catering will definitely deliver” “an exquisite job” that “takes all the guesswork out” of hosting an event either off-site or in the “beautiful surroundings” of her six tony venues; from “impeccably done” food and “exceptional presentation” to “superb service”, clients both corporate and private can expect an affair “simply beyond reproach”, though naturally the “spectacular” performance “doesn’t come cheap”.
