About the National Museum of the American Indian

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) George Gustav Heye Center opened in New York in 1994 at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House on Bowling Green. One of the most splendid Beaux-Arts buildings in NYC, this vast seven-story building was designed by Cass Gilbert in the early 1900s. Rich in architectural and historic significance, the U.S. Custom House is on the National Register of Historic Places.
